Wedding Cake Trends: Groom's Cakes

One of the biggest trends in wedding cakes right now isn't exactly a design trend…it is the return of the Groom's cake.

The Groom's cake has a long and vibrant history. Stemming from an old English custom, the Groom's cake is a separate cake that was originally designed to match the bride's cake. The groom cut and served this cake to the bridesmaids with a glass of wine before going to church-a symbol of hospitality and good luck.

While the idea of two cakes has persisted in certain regions, the design of this second cake has changed wildly. By the 1970's the "freedom of expression" associated with the United States crept into wedding cakes and, logically, groom's cakes.

Today, the Groom's cake is a whimsical expression of the groom's hobbies or interests. Typically designed to serve 15-20 guests, the groom's cake is often chocolate and almost always amusing-even at the most formal of events.

Some grooms request a groom's cake with a specific design while others don't even know to expect one. It is a welcome surprise for any groom to find a specially-designed cake at the reception whether selected by the bride or his family.
