Making a Difference

Marked for Dessert is committed to supporting the community in which we live and work. In that spirit, Marked for Dessert supports many charitable organizations in the Chicagoland area.

Ted Muller Scholarship Fund
The Ted fund enables public school children from families with limited financial resources to take part in quality, fee-based summer programs in Evanston.

Marked for Dessert donated a certificate for "Pastry Chef for a Day". The lucky winner of this certificate gets the opportunity to work side by side with master cake stylist Mark Seaman as he creates spectacular designs and decorations for unique wedding cakes. They will try their hand at some of the techniques Mark uses on their own mini cake under Mark's guidance.

Red Door Shelter
Red Door Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter committed to helping animals in need. Its primary focus is on the rescue, shelter and adoption of cats, dogs and rabbits—the three most popular pets in the United States.

Marked for Dessert donates desserts to Red Door's fundraising functions.

Chicago Abused Women Coalition
CAWC is committed to ending violence against women through the self-help philosophy of empowering women to live free of domestic violence.

Marked for Dessert is heavily involved in the planning of the annual Visions of Chocolate Gala benefit, the agency's premier fundraising event. The 19th annual Gala will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2005 at the Chicago Marriott on Michigan Ave. Tickets are $150 each and include a cocktail reception/silent auction, formal dinner with an elaborate chocolate dessert buffet, and entertainment. For tickets, contact CAWC at 773-489-9081.

Celebrity Chair Auction
An annual event that auction artist-created chairs autographed by celebrities. Food is prepared and donated by selected chefs of Chicago. Proceeds of the event benefit a number of organizations that have included:

  • Chicago Abused Women Coalition
  • Chicago Coalition for the Homeless
  • Chicago Communities in Schools
  • The Children's Place Association
  • Pediatric AIDS Chicago
  • Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago

Marked for Dessert has participated in this event as both an artist via donations of specially crafted "chair cakes" (see photos) as well as an invited dessert caterer. The 2004 Celebrity Charity Chair Auction will be held on Wednesday, December 1 at the Chicago Hilton and Towers.

Hearts Foundation
The Hearst Foundation is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit Illinois corporation that has raised nearly $2.2 million for Chicago HIV/AIDS service organizations. Some of the Hearts Foundation's primary organizations include:

  • AIDS Legal Council
  • AIDS Foundation of Chicago
  • Horizons Community Services
  • Minority Outreach Intervention Project
  • Test Positive Aware Network

Lincoln Park Community Shelter
LPCS is a privately funded homeless shelter run by the support of volunteers in the Lincoln Park Community. Patrons are given sleeping facilities, kitchen facilities, showers, storage rooms, laundry areas, office space, and participation in a social services program in order to empower themselves to make life changes. Marked for Dessert donates custom desserts for the LPCS annual fundraising event.

The American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago
When you can't breathe, nothing else matters. The ALAMC has been fighting lung disease for over 90 years. Their mission is to prevent lung disease and promote lung health through research, advocacy and education. The ALAMC funds a wide variety of research in many areas of lung disease, including asthma, emphysema, lung cancer, tuberculosis, influenza, and breathing problems caused by indoor and outdoor air pollution.

Marked for Dessert donates custom group classes to the ALAMC's annual black tie gala regularly to help generate funds for this important research.

Northlight Theatre
Founded in 1974, Northlight Theatre is among the largest and most respected theaters in the Chicago area, with an annual operating budget of almost $3 million and annual attendance now approaching 75,000. Dedicated to enhancing the cultural life of the North Shore and Chicago, Northlight presents life-affirming theatrical works which reflect and challenge the values and beliefs of the community it serves and involves community members, young and old, in the theatrical experience.

In its 30-year history, the organization has mounted over 150 productions, including over 31 world premieres, and garnered 120 Joseph Jefferson Award nominations and 16 Awards. As one of the area’s premier theatre companies, Northlight is a regional magnet for critical and professional acclaim, as well as talent of the highest quality.

Marked for Dessert regularly donates cakes for donors, and gift cards for silent auctions.
